Not a Good Start For The Elderly 2012

Half way through the first month of January 2012 I cannot say it has been a good beginning for me considering that my 87yr old husband was admitted into hospital on Boxing Day, and my youngest daughter was admitted into the same hospital on a different ward at the same time, it was proved to me that the treatment of both had marked differences as my daughters treatment was excellent, but I had good reason to verbally complain to my husband’s nurses and the ward manager about his treatment, out of respect to my husband I will not go into the embarrassing details here except to say that what is reported in the newspapers about the disgusting treatment of the elderly in hospital is true having had experience of my husbands treatment recently.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has said “It will often be in the best interests of dementia patients to be treated at home”. Many thousands of family carers who are elderly carers themselves like me in their 70’s, and 80’s and who are also suffering ill health themselves while caring for a partner or relative could definitely do with much more help than is now available to enable them to give the dementia patients the nursing, physical, and mental care needed in order for them to remain at home.

Now the elderly have to suffer insults and bullying by those who propose that elderly home owners who have paid their taxes and worked a lifetime to pay for their homes should move out of their family home and get shoved by councils into other housing, as Saga’s Ross Altmann said “ It is outrageous social engineering” despite paying their taxes and being thrifty all their lives the elderly may now have to free up the equity in their homes to fund care while those who have squandered their money or lived off the state will get their care free. Every year 20,000 pensioners have to sell their homes to pay for residential care, would it not be fairer for the funding to be out of general taxation like the NHS.

There has been much in the news again recently regarding cut backs for operations such as.
Cataracts, repair hernias, install grommets, replace worn-out hips and knees, remove infected tonsils, varicose veins, bunions or gallstones. Surgery to relieve snoring, and certain dental procedures, for example removal of wisdom teeth, are also affected.

Spare a thought for the many elderly people who suffer from the above paticularly those who are being cared for at home by their also elderly spouse or family member both of whom can be suffering from one or more of these conditions, many are in their seventies And eighties or older. If an elderly carer has cataracts do they have to wait till they are almost blind before anything is done, or have the affliction of bunions that are painful and crippling, since when was pain considered cosmetic, how are these carers supposed to be able to care for their loved one who probably has the same affliction and worse, when they are themselves almost blind and crippled by the time they get surgery. This should not be allowed to happen to an animal.

Also in the news there has been much reported that thousands of elderly people are being abused and neglected in their own homes by the very staff meant to care for them, this is diabolical!, any elderly person living alone or, member of a family who is caring at home for a loved one in their own homes would be fearful of this and avoid asking for help. There are also many good caring staff who do their utmost under difficult conditions and it must not be forgotten that they have in many cases only about ten minutes to spend per patient, and their salary most inadequate for the work they do. There is no excuse for abuse but it would be wrong to judge all outside employed carers the same, but this abuse must stop and Government and councils must get their act together now and put a stop to it now.

Now it has been suggested that older people who have worked hard paid their taxes, saved and bought their own homes, and spent their lives bringing up their families should once their children have left home be forced to sell their home which they have built with love and hard work and move into smaller accommodation with no thought of enough room for visiting children and grandchildren. The suggestion is to have the owners pay more tax which in many cases will give them no aternative. Thousands of grandparents are doing their best to help their children by taking care of grandchildren so that their children can go out to work and make a living. This while thousands of houses in the UK are lying empty for fifteen or twenty years. There is enough in the news about where costs can be cut, when are the government going to seriously consider them and stop attacking the most vulnerable and hard working.

In two years time it is hoped that all people in the UK will be diagnosed for the symptoms of dementia. Considering there is a tremendous increase of people in the future expected to be suffering from dementia I wonder where the increased number of carers needed to care for these people are going to come from. Those who are elderly and caring for loved ones at home may then have dementia themselves that is if they are not already suffering serious illness due to stress which is now happening. Families are already under strain are all these new carers who are going to be needed and are also untrained be expected to train as unpaid carers and continually be expected to do this out of emotional blackmail for a pittance and very little help, or none as is happening now, is it not sensible to put the needs of carers before an explosion of patients suffering from dementia occurs, without the numbers of carers needed and sensible help provided there is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Already Britain has just one Carer per 100 pensioners the lowest figure anywhere in the developed world, and what ever reforms are made to social care funding, the elderly could still be left with bills running into thousands.

Carer Pensioners are Taken Advantage of

There are now 1.2 million carers over the age of 65yrs, up 15 percent in a decade. These devoted people are taking care of relatives and partners at home who are increasingly living into their 80s and 90s. The total number of these carers is now 6.4 million, this at a time when councils in the UK are slashing vital home help services across the country. The time devoted by family members to caring for aging relatives saves the state £119 Billion each year, out stripping the £99 Billion annual bill for the NHS.
The subsidy amounts to £2.3 Billion a week or £326 million a day, also other pensioners who are not involved in the day to day care of elderly relatives have the financial burden of residential care. Every day more and more elderly people have to sell their homes to pay disgracefully hefty costs or rely on relatives using up precious savings.
Has it occurred to the government that with 11million people alive today in the UK expected to live to 100 that the army of grey carers will have nothing left for their own care that is if they have not died first due to the diabolical stress and their own ill health?.

It is time that the government and society recognised this contribution and gave families the help and support they need. This has been said time and time again only to be put on the back burner by the government, and as yet but very soon to be realised by those in society who think it does not concern them, it should concern everyone young and old. The government must act in urgency and decide how to fund social care now and realise the physical, emotional and financial pressures are all the more intense on carers 65yrs and older.

Bad News or Good News

For several years I have brought to attention not only things that were happening in the UK and the world but I have also pointed out how much worse they would get. Now practically all that is in the newspapers and media prove that this is the case, and the sad fact is that thanks to those ostriches who bury their head in the sand, in one way or another it will get even worse because of apathy. If no one takes notice and makes the effort to right what is wrong in their own life and make a stand for those who are even worse off than themselves bad things will escalate, it is all very well to take a break and join in with whatever entertainment is going to relax, forget and not take any notice but none of us can afford to ignore that not only must changes be made by government but also by all people in order to prevail against the odds.

There is nothing we can do about acts of God which will happen as the terrible tragedies of earthquakes and tsunamis etc strike, but thankfully there are those who heroically do what ever they can to help those affected by these catastrophes, and who do make a practice of helping anyone in sickness or difficulties as much as they can, unfortunately the majority of these good people are the ones most taken advantage of. Everyone should look into their heart and ask why these good people are all too few in the world and why they are in general the ones who suffer the most. It is of little use for me to go on repeating myself when everything is made obvious in the national news which is available to all, eyes are beginning to open all over the world and like it or not it should be everyone’s choice to be courageous and do what is good and right, I doubt then there would be as many tragic acts of God that we sorrowfully have to learn from. It is my belief that with the technology and scientific gifts we have, and all that is happening in the world we are living in the most important days since Jesus Christ walked our earth if we waste them we are wasting ourselves. We need to work together with courage and unafraid of those who are negative and destructive whether they are in positions of power or those who are daily around us. We can do it, and those who persevere and act with faith and kindness for the good of all as well as for themselves will inevitably win. It is up to all of us to turn bad news into good.

When is the UK Government Going Give Justice-

For heavens sake when are the UK government going to give justice to carers and the elderly, how many times do so many thousands of people have to plead to be noticed. The government are supposed to work for the people, not the people work for the government as so many thousands of carers have been doing for far too many years without enough help or fair payment,. It is said full training on how to cope with dementia should be given to all home care workers. Thousands have given up their jobs and lives to care for their relatives with dementia, and thousands who are retired and elderly themselves are devoting long and arduous hours to caring for loved ones again without fair payment or enough help. One in two carers is also at risk of stress, depression and other serious illnesses because they have to struggle without support, what the government have offered is far too little to the point of being a disgraceful insult to humane national interest.

It is imperative that everyone reads this article link below now and everyone realises not only how many people are suffering but just what do they think the future is going to hold for them as they get older if something just and reasonable is not done now before it is also too late for them and they are in the same situation as reported in this article. For those who need a nebuliser machine it is sometimes difficult to get one quickly or find information where to buy one. Anyone with severe asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease- COPD know how vital this can be particularly if for some reason their machine breaks down and they need to buy a replacement quickly. There are nebulisers that can be loaned out but they seem to be in short supply, also little information where there are maintenance facilities for their machine in an area where they live. The best information I could find from hospital, clinic, and chemist pharmacy when I caught a bad infection which severely affected my asthma and I needed a nebuliser quickly was to look on the internet. Shame on the UK government 2011

Shame on everyone who does not address and support the cause to help carers young and old today, too many people are ignoring this situation at their peril, does anyone think that tragedy cannot strike them at some time in their lives when they least expect it.

Would anyone like to see their young children end up being their carer, there are over a million child carers in the UK and thousands more not yet known about, one in twelve children are already carers with responsibilities far beyond their age with tasks they should never have to shoulder, such as bathing and administering medication and injections, cooking, cleaning, and taking care constantly of parents and family they love day and night, what chance do these children have of a decent education when at least two thirds of schools have no idea about the horrendous situation these children are in, How many of them have any time for homework or to think about their future.

Parents feel guilty and afraid to go to social services for help in case their children are taken away from them. It is a post code lottery depending on where they live as to how much help they can get and the UK government are letting charities take the brunt of the work that they should be doing. Shame on them, do their children go to bed worried, afraid, tired, anxious, desperate, and depressed. This cruelty will continue and get worse unless people who are not yet experiencing this do something about it and get in touch with their member of parliament to get them to act with compassion and justice now.

It would be wonderful if by remembering the true meaning of Christmas if family and neighbours would decide that as well as of spending money on celebration in order to forget for a short while things they would prefer to forget, and spending money on gifts that may possibly lead to debt, that everyone would do an act of kindness for the elderly, disabled, and those in need without asking for payment, as Jesus said “If you do it for the least of these you do it unto me”

It is true that financial payment should not be expected to be given to those who give freely from their heart to those they love and care for, but it is essential that all carers in this world should be in circumstances that enable them to live in order to give, “We are not always given what we want but what we need in order to grow” all carers need to live and survive to be able to do that and the UK government are not providing the means.

Those who are wealthy and comfortable may regard themselves as winners and the rest as survivors, or losers, rich or poor it is the survivors who are the winners in the end it is vital how we choose to be one. All our bodies eventually become dust and it is our choice to leave behind only good energy to remain and continue, as good and bad always reaps what it sows.

Make the meaning of Christmas count and be at peace and enjoy, for inward peace lasts, happiness and unhappiness doesn’t. May life smile on you all with good health and strength and many heaven sent blessings now and in the new year.

Mr Cameron now states that he intends to spend 2 million pounds of tax payer’s money on getting government statisticians to measure what makes people happy. The Behavioural Insight Team led by economist David Halpern claim that they will find intelligent ways to encourage people to make better choices for themselves, it will build on the ‘Mindspace’ report commissioned by the previous labour government. This looked at ways of changing people’s behaviour by influencing not just what they consciously think but also by influencing their automatic processes- cues from the subconscious, from the behaviour of people around them, and from emotional situations that affect their decisions. This is frightening! Ministers say public well being increases if people are given the impression that they control their lives. Ministers by manipulating choices will then give people the impression that they are in control of the choices they are making.
Cass Sunstein President Obamas regulation czar an ultra-left radical with seriously anti-democratic ideas has advocated that the government should secretly feed apparently independent commentators with information in order to dupe the public into believing such government propaganda because it purports to be the commentators own opinion. Mental Illness

Little or nothing has been done in the last fifty years to improve mental health in the UK. There are new labels for mental problems some we never heard of years ago and an incredible increase in forms of depression, addiction, and personality disorders. New drugs maybe helpful to some patients and electric shock treatment is still available. Anyone who has had electric shock treatment knows it is not pleasant and has side effects which include short loss of memory and headache, sometimes severe. Although this may well have proved to have good results in some cases surely there has to be less barbaric treatments in this day and age for successful results. Expediency is not the answer and even if cut backs and under funding maybe responsible the person suffering is most important and should have the attention and correct treatment and medication that is best for them.
There are very often those who would benefit greatly from group therapy and more provision should be made available both for the patient and those who care for them. Waiting lists for treatment should be cut to the minimum as no one should have to beg for help as I personally know some have had to. Meanwhile many people with mental problems, plus addiction are living with their family, or worse still on their own. There are those being cared for at home by families, or a family carer who are inexperienced, they are not psychiatrists, trained psychologists, or mental nurses and have a great responsibility with little or no outside help. While more patients are now allowed to live at home or in outside accommodation it is important that more help is given to carers of the patient and to the patient themselves now or the consequences of having more mentally ill people in the community can only be of further concern in the future.
The carers at home are coping with an unstable situation because of some patient’s unpredictability and find it difficult to always get the help at the time when it is needed; this should not be ignored till it is too late. This is yet another priority that should be top of the list for the health of the nation.

Carers Continually ignored

Not so long ago it was being considered that carers should be paid £110 per week for their valuable work which saves the government £86 billion pounds per year, now because of the terrible financial state the last government left us with it seems unlikely that carers will get the payment they so desperately need and deserve. When will everyone realise that until the carers of this world are put first nothing of significance will ever be lasting, it is those who put others needs at least equal or above their own instead of greed that change for all humanity will build a world society fit for all to live in.

It is good news that NICE has now made available the drugs costing two pounds fifty a day for those in the early stages of dementia, any medical advances are hugely welcome with regard to helping these sufferers bearing in mind that there will be an increase of many thousands of these sufferers of dementia and Alzheimers in the future, it also follows that what ever progress is made thousands of carers will also be needed many of whom are middle aged parents, also grandparents who having brought up and cared for their children and now find themselves also giving caring help for grandchildren at which time also due to us all living longer find their own aging parents in need of caring help. Because of the great burden placed on middle aged carers and grandparents the great- grandparents are then in a situation where one aged great-grandparent is left caring for their aged partner or one or both have to be placed in a care home many of which are being closed down, or are still unsuitable, or substandard such as was reported in the Daily Mail that at Parkside House 5 elderly people died of neglect in two weeks.

We are left now with so many important priorities in society to be considered it is difficult to choose which should come first. Everyone should be made aware of the increasing numbers of people suffering from Alzheimers and the urgent need for governments and the general public to take action and improve the help for people with dementia and their carers. Everyone should unite and make the effort as it is vital to act now before there are increased numbers in the future. Remember this does not just affect the life of the person suffering from this disease but also their carer’s life, and their families lives too. Charging Pensioners Unjust Death Tax R.I.P, OFF

When labour first proposed charging pensioners a £20.000 death tax the conservative government campaigned hard against it yet in spite of them depicting it as an R.I.P OFF they have now decided to revive it. Tory health secretary Andrew Lansley has now appointed an independent commission to consider a compulsory charge of £20,000 to fund nursing care to be paid on retirement or on death. This means that thousands could have to sell their homes and would cause grievous injustice to those who have worked hard all their life, paid their taxes and saved for their old age, while the poorest will still have costs paid by the state. Hundreds of thousands of people who care for their families would be hit twice over; people who have given their lives caring for loved ones will be expected to pay for care they never received. This is a monstrous injustice.

Because the Tories and Lib Dems failed to agree after they entered the coalition they have had to establish an independent commission. Mr Lansley said “experts on the board would not be fettered from discussing any option including the contraversional levy”

We all know that after considering every option a FAIR and JUST decision must be reached and the people must see to it that it is and not just an easily broken promise. The money must come from somewhere but it is time to stop taking advantage of the good and vulnerable people in our society. These people have paid their taxes, have given, do give, and will continue to give what they can afford, but they should not be regarded as stupid. There are hundreds of ways to cut costs and save money during this recession and to penalize those who are the backbone of society is not the way. If pensioners, the elderly, and disabled are seen as has beens or useless, and their carers who have already saved the government billions of pounds treated as doormats everyone will deserve a greedy and non-compassionate society so whatever scheme is come up with it had better be honest, fair, and just. There are many millions of pounds still being squandered, and tax payers money still owed by the banks. Find the money elsewhere and make that a priority before penalizing those who do not deserve it. Then it may become a land fit for heroes.

What is it Going to Take to Wake People up to the Continuous Plight of Carers

Most people will agree that it makes us all feel good to be needed and that we are doing something helpful and useful. A team of American researchers led by Dr Michael Paulin of the University of Buffalo analysed behaviour and well being among just 73 spousal carers and found that carers experience fewer negative emotions when they engage in active care such as feeding, bathing, toileting, and general physical caring for a spouse, however the variable that did affect outcome was the level of perceived inter-dependence- the extent to which carers viewed themselves as sharing a mutually beneficial relationship. Dr Paulin added overall we wouldn’t say that caring for an ailing loved one is going to be good for you or healthy for you, but certain activities maybe beneficial, especially in high quality relationships, however Dr Paulin said it is extremely important that care takers receive the right kind of help at the right time- perhaps less time off from active care duties and more time off from the onerous task of passively monitoring an ailing loved one. I have already mentioned in my blog the onerous task of passively caring at home for loved ones particularly those with mental problems including dementia which has and still is being continuously overlooked by the UK Government along with many other aspects of care that carers at home are giving full time at the expense of their own health. I must repeat yet again this is a full time unpaid job and thousands who are doing it are in their 70’s and over. We all expect pain during this recession but carers have been experiencing it for many years and also the taken for granted attitude of Government to allow carers to work incessantly till they drop. Good News, Nothing is Impossible Even if the Odds seem Against You

Please read this as it is of worldwide concern how many countries this polypropylene mesh is used in.

What the UK Government is saying about readmissions in the UK... Example ... the patient has surgery, then the consultants have to ensure you are fit to be discharged from hospital, then if any complications occur within a month after discharge they will get paid by the Government... BUT... if the patient has to go back after this deadline, anything after this month allowance for additional treatment the hospital has to pay. So in effect, they will definitely think twice about putting in these medical devices as they KNOW we will be admitted continuously for years, this is why it has been such a money spinner for them in the past, the Government used to pay for each readmission no matter how many times the patient was admitted, NOW the Government only pays for the first month after discharge. Considering everyone who faces TVT or any other medical device using Mesh will have continuous health problems I feel sure they will now stop using them and will give alternative treatments ie colopsuspension even though surgery time and recovery is longer and more expensive to begin with, there is no continuous health problems unlike using MESH.

Unfortunately this does not entirely help those who have already had polypropylene mesh already inserted and have been suffering for years. My daughter’s life has been ruined and the effect on her marriage to a good husband and family is devastating along with many other women and men who have had this mesh inserted. My daughter has worked tirelessly in spite of great health difficulties to help people in the UK and worldwide. Are the coalition government in the UK slow on fulfilling their promises to carers because carers are so bogged down with responsibility, lack of time, and bad health that they do not have any strength left, therefore it seems to be considered that carers are and will be unable to acquire fair justice?. Why are carers still waiting?

We have all been told that everyone will feel pain due to cut backs, does the coalition government and everyone carer or not realise that carers have been feeling great pain for many years. Carers have always done their best and are still doing so in extremely difficult circumstances and need everyone’s support who ever and whatever their own difficulties are.

Carers need the support of everyone young and old; to ignore carer’s rights is to reap a careless and heartless future. Carers have learned to have a great deal of tolerance and patience. Carers understand that no matter how much money anyone has that both happiness and unhappiness are fleeting emotions neither lasts. They also know that love and the inward peace that grows from caring does last and endures; this should not make them doormats to be trampled on, or an after thought. They should be made a priority by the government now.

This is a horrendous problem in the UK and also worldwide Carers must make their plight known universally; and protect themselves because if they do not they know humanity will suffer the consequences.

Less Money and More Power to Councils

Now that the coalition government have decided to give more power to UK councils and less money to work with it is important that stringent watch is kept on what the results of this will be in different parts of the UK. We all know what a post code lottery is and the affects this has had on many people in various areas of the country, one example being the access to drugs for cancer and Alzheimer’s patients. There have been some grievously bad decisions made by some councils that have been reported in the newspapers and media, and certain bullying tactics, spying and unfair threats of prosecution by any councils should be stopped immediately.

I have already mentioned on my blog how children are being encouraged to spy on neighbours. Now bin men are being given Blackberry mobile phones to spy on householders and get evidence of crimes such as putting general waste into recycling bins. The Blackberries will also be used to spy on the bin men themselves. This is a £1.75 million deal with Vodafone Biffa working for 25 local authorities. Warden bin police can hand out on the spot £100 fines to anyone who puts their bin out too early and anything that the council considers an environmental crime (It seems no matter how small)

Whatever recycling targets councils have to meet targets should never come before compassion and common sense, or any other targets they have to meet either with regard to anything.

Spying of any kind does not promote neighbourliness or genuine concern for others. There are so many examples where tax payer’s money can be saved. Another being the £1.4 million being given to British scientists to find out why children and teenagers leave their lights and televisions switched on. This is supposed to help to cut the energy consumption of children and teenagers, surely parents can be educated enough to control this. There are far too many examples for me to list here, and thousands of people I am sure who could list better and more sensible ways to save taxpayers money.

I love our Mother Earth and we need to clean up, it is how the means to do it is implemented that needs careful consideration. We need solutions to many things; people who are not afraid should come forward with their ideas and make sure they are discussed fairly and sensibly in high places.

Instead of bin police, why not get those who have been sentenced to community service not just to collect the rubbish but to sort it out at the tip, (many partially sighted, and elderly people are easily confused by the number of different bins)

Make an effort to control excess packaging at the source, everyone knows how much waste there is, just look in the supermarkets.

Make better progress in stopping all the junk mail pushed through our letter boxes.

Not as easy as it sounds when there are those making money out of it! No excuses please.

Now The UK Election is over

Because of the UK elections I have not posted very much till now because as everyone knows things have been pretty hectic here, and it is obvious it is going to take some time for organisation and stability in government, to date this is as yet a short note to keep in touch as it is early days with regard to any attention or concern being paid to social care, and elderly over worked carers as usual. Let everyone remember that united we stand and divided we fall.
I must say I agree with David Cameron that everyone now should put more emphasis on giving and this is how it should be though I would like to add without taking unfair advantage, this has gone on far too long regarding elderly carers who are in ill health themselves due to caring for loved ones at home for many years without consideration and fair acknowledgement.
It is totally bewildering why although a question was submitted about social care and carers during the political debates on television it was ignored and seemingly not considered important enough.

Which Priority Comes First in the UK?

The first election debate on ITV 1 will perhaps encourage more younger viewers to vote and hopefully everyone will have a long term vision into the future. More political politics and less personal politics are needed for everyone to make the most sensible decisions. There are a lot of things that need to be said before the UK election, with so many important issues to consider. What priorities should come first when there are so many and how should they be put into practise.

I am still concerned about the thousands of carers described by David Cameron as the unsung heroes and heroines which in deed carers are, the suggestion that they should all have a one weeks respite(per year?) does little to ease their burden. The suggestion that carers should be entitled to budget their own money is a good idea, but what money? When elderly carers are supposed to be retired they are still working extremely hard caring for loved ones at home and are not paid any money at all for the vital work they do, it is time for the emotional blackmail to stop, carers cannot live on love alone, it is adding insult to injury relying on their compassion and voluntary help to all society to say there is not enough money when they have saved the government 87 billion pounds per year for many years, in fairness carers should be a top priority now.

Many unemployed relatives, and young people would be more willing to stay at home and care for their loved ones if their caring was considered the difficult work that it is and paid for accordingly, plus there should be courses to enable them to do so, and laws to prevent anyone taking unfair advantage. This would encourage families and others to have more love and respect, and help to keep the elderly and disabled in their own home and not have to sell their houses to cover costs, or go into a care home, plus enable people to pay taxes.
I apologise for repeating myself but when is someone going to listen and do what is right.

Anyone caring for a loved one at home suffering from a mental disability knows that whatever mental problem the patient has their moods can fluctuate and their and actions can be disruptive and sometimes extremely difficult to cope with.
Nurses are required to have a degree in their nursing profession yet thousands of carers who have full time responsibility caring at home for their loved ones who have a mental illness are at a loss having neither a degree in mental nursing nor an adequate means test regarding the patient’s behavioural problem. Although this can be difficult to assess individually because behaviour can vary dramatically in individual cases there is no excuse to ignore any individual suffering from mental illness or carer who needs help.

Due to cost cutting in the UK those with only the severest physical disabilities can receive help at home, it is now imperative that those who are mentally ill are given a fair assessment, and their carers given the consideration they deserve, does the NHS think that they are going to conveniently disappear, or are these carers many who are elderly going to be expected to get a degree and work up to 24 hours a day till they drop.

Dementia affects the frontal lobes of the brain and can cause severe personality problems it is a mental illness and should be treated as such even though the patient maybe physically capable in other ways. Much more attention must be given to all those who are mentally ill and those who care for them at home; whoever wins in the forthcoming election in the UK this must be one of the first priorities.

Millions of pounds earmarked to give Britain’s unsung army of carers vital short-term breaks is being plundered by the NHS to plug holes in health budgets, a shocking 80 percent of a 50 million pound package has been creamed off by primary care trusts before it reaches hard pressed carers who work round the clock to help loved ones to stay at home.

Social Workers Month March 2010. Love them or Hate them

Looking forward to Social Workers month march 2010, anyone who wants to become a social worker should begin by sincerely wanting to be in a position to help people in the best possible way. There are however too many examples reported in the media where social services have failed. Maybe it is because there are those who unfortunately see their work more as a career than a vocation which neither helps anyone who probably desperately needs it, or attracts the right kind of social worker. Most try to do their best and find in many cases it is not easy.
Everyone has their own ideas and it can be difficult if the good ideas presented by social workers in the field with personal contact with their cases are ignored by those in authority above them which can lead to bad decisions being made. I have had experience of both good social workers who are excellent, and the bad that are truly horrendous. The responsibility and power that those working in social care have is enormous, lives can be helped or completely destroyed, and we all want the best social workers who we can trust in the job. It is certain that there are going to be changes in the UK in the future and we must all make sure that good social workers know what their work entails and are able to follow through to get the best reliable results for anyone that needs help what ever their individual circumstances are.
To those social workers who are successfully doing good work God Bless you.

Thousands of needless deaths in UK

1,200 needless deaths at one hospital in UK, one family lost four loved ones within 18 months her grandmother, sister, uncle, and six day old baby, and no one is being blamed or brought to answer for it. Staff were bullied to meet targets all because Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust put government targets and cost cutting ahead of patient care and the failed boss walks off with a £1 million pension pot, six months salary and a possible£400,000 pay-off. Some patients were left without food and water for days, filthy wards, and a catalogue of bloody things enough to make you think this has got to be a nightmare this is worse than diabolical.

Lost innocents, Immigrant Home Children

2010 year of the British Home child, some people may be wondering who a British Home child is. Try to imagine being a very young child from an impoverished background being offered the opportunity to have a wonderful life and live in a land where the sun always shines, even though it meant leaving their mother, father, sisters, and brothers behind. These children some of them orphans, even street children were horded up under the child migration scheme founded by Kingsley Fairbridge in 1869 and sent to live in a foreign land, some were even taken without their parents knowledge, 150,000 children over a period of 350 years, this practice lasted right up until the late 1960’s, and far from being the promised land when they arrived these children found themselves no more than slaves working as servants in households and doing farm labouring work, being abused with no one who cared. Council Snooping, Using Children Again

The councils in UK backed by the Dept of Health are now being allowed to snoop using children as young as five years old who are given a form to fill out about the intimate details of their home life, not content with handing out handheld computers equipped with global positioning devices to photograph wrongdoers without being seen to children aged 7 to 11 yrs old (see my post June last year) forms will now be sent out to 200 schools across the country, and other councils are monitoring the scheme closely. The questions ask about junk food, how much water they drink, television habits, family time, whether they eat breakfast or not,, and how they get to school, children are asked to colour in questions on how much fruit they eat compared to crisps and fizzy drinks, and even if they like themselves or not. Hundreds of life-style quizzes have been handed out in an attempt to build a picture of individual households. Results are stored on a data-base allowing families deemed to be at risk to be referred to social services or doctors, do you trust this?

Alex Deane of Big Brother Watch described it as an unbelievable intrusion into private life he said “The state does not bring up children parents do. There is an important distinction between teaching and nannying- or even bullying and this steps way over the mark”

The questions follow guide lines set by NICE and the NHS regulatory body. Civil liberties campaigner Josie Appleton of The Manifesto Club said “Councils and schools should concentrate on providing everyone with a good education, and should keep their nose out of children’s lunch boxes and away from the family dinner table”

Much as I regret to see the lax attitude in the way some parents regard the parental upbringing of their children, and the way obesity has become a problem I agree some parents need educating, but to use children in this manner to snoop is totally wrong, how can children grow up to love and respect their parents when they are asked to do such things, who are the state and the councils trying to brainwash and control here?

Why People are Caring Less for the Aged in UK

Why people are less concerned about the elderly in the UK today is not surprising considering the changes that have occurred in our society over the past decades and the problems we face in 2010, sadly background upbringing has eroded slowly over the years for many reasons with most people taking a more relaxed attitude towards values that were once considered important for everyone’s welfare.

I could not explain the reasons for the incredible indifference and couldn’t care less attitude towards the elderly and mentally incapable better than the article by Melanie Phillips in The Daily Mail Nov 18th 2009 I urge everyone to read it again and bear it in mind as the forth coming election approaches.

What Happens When a Carer Drops Dead

It should be obvious to everyone that if a sole carer who is caring for a loved one at home dies suddenly when there is no help or support and lies undiscovered for days that their disabled loved one then left without their carer will suffer terribly and certainly die horrifically too.

It comes as no surprise to me that this tragedy which I have been warning everyone about on healingspur for the past three years would happen if elderly carers at home were not given the help and attention they desperately need. There are thousands of hidden carers many who know that when they seek help they are given a pass the buck attitude and then ignored, no wonder that the elderly become recluse and afraid to let their situation be known. When there are no relatives to help even if there are kind neighbours as reported in The Daily Mail today 13.1 2010 regarding the dreadful deaths of Derek Randall 76yrs his wife’s sole carer despite not being able to lift her, and his disabled wife Jean 79yrs who was doubly incontinent and unable to walk. Surely it would not be too much to ask the authorities to take notice of a neighbour’s request for help for the couple, it is an outrage that when Heather Footitt neighbour phoned Age Concern helpline she was rudely told not to intervene and more or less told to mind her own business.

The accusation against Britain’s largest Charity for the elderly emerged as Northamptonshire County Council claimed the Randalls had been visited by The Health and Social Services staff throughout December and beforehand, if that is so why was nothing done and they were left to die in the freezing cold with a single bar heater and only the gas rings on the cooker to heat their house. There is no excuse for this. We can only hope that Health Minister Mike O’Brian not only investigates this matter but bears in mind that something sensible and fair must be done for all carers as a priority because if not this will happen again.

The Second Week Into 2010, GM, and Grey Goo!

I do not begin the new year 2010 worrying about the future but with great concern for everyone near and far, as we approach the future there is a growing recognition of an insidious apathy that has enveloped the majority who have put their trust in those in power and authority who have instigated laws and decisions for their own advantage. It is good that there is now hope as we realise that by working together we can change things for the better, it is a choice everyone has to make regarding all that we can do to help to change what ever is wrong be it large or small, even those things in our personal lives count. It is important to prioritise our health for it is obvious we can do nothing without it. There are amazing and wonderful advances being made in medicine today but of little use if we are unable to benefit from them, and much more research is needed in areas that concern all of us.

Recently reported is the decision now being made to introduce a massive expansion of GM foods into the UK, and those that contain nanoparticles, as yet there is no guarantee that hi-tech products are to be labelled as containing nanoparticles –microscopic compounds that can worm their way into the brain, liver and kidneys with unknown consequences. We most certainly do have a right to know what is being put into our bodies, it is also our responsibility and imperative for us all to aquaint ourselves to what will undoubtedly affect ourselves and our children for generations to come.

I would like to start this New Year 2010 with some good news that chases away any dark clouds that may seem to be on the horizon in our lives, what ever adversities we may face in what may appear to be a bleak future it is good to remember that it is our decisions that will help to create a better world, how we live our lives in a good, righteous and just way through the bad times is what will bring balance to all. The outcome is victory for humanity and our beautiful Planet Earth. Everything we face with courage and faith to achieve this is worthwhile for ultimately the news is good not bad, nothing good and necessary to creation was ever created to be destroyed it is as infinite as our universe and those beyond, look to the stars and be grateful for everything. Christmas and the forthcoming election will be on most peoples minds in the UK, this can be a worrying time for millions considering that reading in the newspapers and following the media we know that in almost countless areas there are horrendous problems happening in the UK and worldwide, and all these things need to be brought to everyone’s attention in order for us all to work together to do something about them, particularly when deceit, unfairness, and broken promises by those in government and authority do their best to ignore and confuse. There are too many issues now of great importance that cannot be ignored.

We are a small planet in a very large universe with countless universes beyond, and now that Christmas will soon be here it is good to consider this and what it truly means. There are those in power and want more who will ignore this and be intent on only enjoying the material benefits. Our difficult situations that we find ourselves in will still be with us but we can still choose to place all our concerns in a higher Divine power that gives us strength and guidance, and wants us to be happy. Those in their arrogance who do not have this faith, and can see only material things and themselves as born for destruction at the end of their short days grab what they can. How sad is that, but we should not despair and look to the heavens and find enjoyment in what is good and free in nature, and share what we can even if it is only a kind word this Christmas. Ask for guidance in these troubled times and it is given for there is no greater intelligence and power than the ONE from whence all creation came, it is no use complaining it is important only to do what is productive and be as helpful as we can in whatever area or situation we find ourselves in, to do our best for all and be happy doing it, for happiness comes from the inside, not the outside. Choose to be happy and not harassed.

Because there are so many injustices I could have brought to attention and posted on my blog today every one being just as important, for December 1st I decided to post this instead, and for now till the new year, and maybe till after all the electioneering and we have a new government of some semblance of order, common sense, and good intent in the UK, I will continue searching for uplifting good news, anyone got any let me know.

Gordon Brown has stolen the life time savings from elderly people who paid millions of pounds into pension funds to ensure provision for their security in old age and there is no way any government can ever pay it back. Now in order to set up a new National Care Service which we do not even know what the government plan for a new National Care Service would involve Gordon Brown is planning to take away vital benefits from the elderly and disabled which means pensioners will lose around £60 per week which could be as much as a quarter of their income, again he plans to snatch benefits back from 2.4 million vulnerable pensioners. Anne Begg labour MP and other Labour back benchers are fighting to save the Attendance Allowance, it is vital that the two National Disability benefits remain to give people voluntary control over their money for their individual needs. In the NHS we are not means tested and definitely should not be in the National Care Service. Tory Health Spokesman Andrew Lansley said he would keep the two allowances, he added “as ever with Gordon Brown you have to read the small print”

Extremely important to read is that experts claim doctors and nurses need more training in how to care for people who are dying because wrong diagnosis can result in withdrawal of food and fluids when they might otherwise survive. Shockingly the decision do not resuscitate is falling to trainee junior doctors with no countersigning by consultants, in one in six cases where patients were not expected to survive there was no evidence of any discussion between doctors and the patients relatives about whether treatment would be limited.

Rotten Double Standards

It is disgusting that UK MP’s should be allowed to employ family members as secretaries, cleaners, gardeners etc and have their expenses for them paid while carers who are caring for disabled relatives at home are expected to do so for a pittance or nothing at all, do these MP’s realise that although thousands of carers are supposed to be retired and having struggled to save all their lives that these carers some elderly who have fought for their country not only have nursing responsibilities but all the above mentioned commitments to pay for too, and thousands cannot afford it and are struggling to do them single handed.

Instead of bringing in outsiders why not train and pay family members many who have lost their jobs during this recession or have been forced to give up their jobs because of tragic circumstances, they would be compassionate and willing, able to keep their livelihood, and pay taxes. All worn out carers are still working out of love and being taken advantage of, when is what they are doing going to be considered hard work and be paid for accordingly, they have saved the government Billions and still are.

MP’s now want a £40,000 per annum increase in their salary while earning 50 times more than constituents just for jobs on the side what a disgrace they are, if they have no conscience and do not care themselves why expect those in society to care, look around and see what their work and example has helped cause.

Poor Provision of Mental Health Services

There is huge concern about poor provision of mental health services for older patients. This is also of enormous concern for anyone of any age, as reported in the Daily mail Dr Ian Thomson MA (psychology) MB BCh (Oxon) FRC Psych, Yarmouth Isle of Wight said “This is a question of funding Health Authorities have used the closure of mental hospitals to rob the mental illness budget for more popular specialities. Where resources are depleted the psychiatrist becomes reluctant to accept responsibility for a personality disordered person by asserting that their problems are not mental illness, the buck is passed to society”

Anyone who is a carer at home for a loved one with a mental illness know this to be true and are bearing the burden of being their loved ones mental nurse too many times without adequate training and help, many are elderly and supposedly retired doing this extremely difficult task, it is a utterly unfair to thrust this upon the vulnerable people in society.

NHS Age Discrimination Banned by Law

Some doctors think that elderly people past a certain age are not worth bothering about and many of the elderly have been missing out on health advice, scans, and drugs. Now ageism in the NHS is to be outlawed giving the elderly the same consideration as younger patients. Ministers have been criticised for not including the NHS and social care in the general age discrimination law due to come into force in 2012. Earlier this year a survey found almost half doctors caring for older patients believed the NHS is institutionally ageist, as many as seven out of ten specialists say the elderly are more likely to struggle to get conditions diagnosed than younger patients. Now it is to become illegal for any difference to be made on age grounds. This is good news, fairer humane consideration for the elderly as it is how we treat our elderly that shows what kind of country we are. Having NHS discrimination banned by law means that those who believe they are victims will be able to go to the courts.

How Little We Know About Ourselves

Science is finding out more about the mysteries of the brain and how it works, and in the future many things that were thought to be impossible may well be achieved as more information is discovered, and the knowledge how to develop it, not only is knowledge important but also wisdom in order to know how to use it.

Just as there was something intelligent that must have been there before the Big Bang to cause it and create the perfect pattern of the universe and universes beyond. There are indeed many links where it is possible for carers to go for help and advice but there seems to be a distinct lack of groups available where carers of those with mental and behavioural problems can meet other carers in the same situation in order to support each other and discuss the many things they have in common. No one knows the difficulties better than those who are experiencing them and it is a great help to know they are not alone.

AA not only provides help for the addict but also have groups for the family and friends concerned who can be of help to each other. More accessible groups like this are needed for relative carers of loved ones with mental illness and behavioural problems at home.
The UK government plan to employ many more social workers in the future but however well trained they are they go home at the end of the day, relative carers are there twenty four seven and only those that are know how difficult it is when problems arise, even if they can cope. Talking to other carers experiencing similar difficulties does help. Social workers may do all they can but providing helpful links is not enough specially when as many carers have found they are shunted from one link to another and end up in ever decreasing circles and get nowhere. I just hope that when this army of social workers arrive there is the back up of necessary services people can rely on.

I am sure that when carers have looked for help they more often than not receive very good advice on how to care for the person they are caring for, but how often are they given the help they need for themselves, and how many befrienders are there to help them.

Forgotten Children of Bulgaria

After watching the programme on BBC4 this evening about the children from the Mogilino home in Bulgaria I still find it difficult to type through the tears, considering the unimaginable inhuman suffering that these children have experienced it was good to hear that the Mogilino home was closed on October 1st 2009 but please have compassion and remember that there are still 8,000 children in homes across Bulgaria who need help and the government must pay attention and give them the help they so desperately need.
Anyone with a heart should do what they can to support and help these children, we on carers-healingspur website were happy to see that Didi, Milen, and Misho, and others trying to do the same are happier now and are courageously building a better life for themselves after all the torturous pain in their life that they have endured,. All these children still need our help and prayers.

Life in the UK was so much simpler in the old days before plastic and the swift advancement in technology. I am not saying that everything was good in the old days but everything was certainly far less complicated and everyone was less stressed out and worried as they seem to be now. We had different problems to face such as cleaning the grate and lighting a coal fire in the morning as there was no central heating, nights were cold and in winter it was freezing and uncomfortable, but we warmed ourselves happily in front of the fire with a hot drink and a bowl of porridge as there were few fancy cereals to choose from, where as now we are spoilt for choice among the many cereals available.

That is one of the biggest problems we have today being spoilt in all directions for choice which adds to our daily confusion. Our brains get addled by constant adverts on TV, with junk mail and spam persuading us to buy, how to change our appearance, our lives, even what to eat, and definitely what to do with our money. Life moves at a quicker pace and we constantly have to make decisions because of advanced technology, and because of those ambitious idiots who are intent to mend something that isn’t broken, and those who are determined to confuse us by needlessly changing things for their own advantage be it for money, power, or both, rather than getting priorities right.

There has been an insidious intervention into all our lives and most people have allowed it because they have mistakenly mistrusted the so called experts and thought it was all for our benefit. Maybe during this recession we will slow down, and not give in to the methods of those who make pie crust promises and deliberately bribe us with goodies that are bad for us. Maybe we will learn to appreciate what we have no matter how small and be more careful as to who we trust to make our decisions for us because it is easier to allow them to do so while we take the good times for granted. There is ultimately only one decision to make, to live in the moment trusting our own honest decisions rather than leaving them to others.

Pandas Deserve to Live

Considering that it was our fault that the Panda’s habitat and means to live was destroyed it seems some think that we should now allow the Panda to conveniently disappear altogether and allow money to be spent on furthering the future of other species, shouldn’t we do all that we can to help the survival of all creatures whether the creature is pretty cute, or perceived as ugly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that lives is a gift, has a right, and should be preserved. Money is not the priority compassion is. We should not be defeated by the fact that too much money is spent in the wrong way in this world, in fairness it can be found. The Panda or any animal or creature should never be allowed to become extinct just because it is convenient to do so.

Home Assistance Restricted

Revealed in a Whitehall report social services are being forced to restrict home assistance, because of the UK government’s decision to spend into saving failed banks and institutions the most vulnerable and weakest will be first to suffer, only the most sick and disabled will have the right to have help with washing, cleaning, shopping, and free meals. Councils find it easier to make savings by cutting services for the elderly and are more worried about antagonising powerful public sector unions. This means 600,000 elderly will have lost their right to free home help since 2006. Depriving the elderly of help to live in their own homes forcing them for the need to move into residential care homes, many of which are closing, or are substandard, it is a national disgrace. Next spring only 14 percent of local authorities will give help at the moderate level and 81 percent to those with substantial needs, it is disgusting and an abomination that the government have done little, or nothing to help vulnerable elderly people. A government green paper on care for the aged and frail proposed new taxes on retirees to meet the cost.

The Big Care Debate

I am weary of repeating myself as are also many thousands of carers about how desperately important it is that carers looking after their loved ones at home receive the help they need and before their deteriorating health which is evident right now becomes yet even more burdensome on the NHS. The majority in the UK want to keep the NHS but with much needed changes made within it. The thanks that these carers get for the unpaid work they do is appreciated but does not alter the dire circumstances they find themselves in through no fault of their own, and particularly after working and paying their taxes through the years, surely they have saved the country enough money to make them a priority before their situation worsens as it certainly will if government promises are not kept, and they are slow to keep them.

Forgiveness

When our life is threatened, or the life of someone we love and it is a life or death situation, and it is caused by someone else’s negligence, hate, or any other reason, forgiveness is extremely important no matter how difficult it may be.
We should know how important forgiveness is for those who have caused the pain and also forgiveness for ourselves for any thoughts of vengeance that come to mind. When feeling the severity of our pain it is for our own well being emotionally and physically to forgive for forgiveness heals us, and everyone we come into contact with.

The older we all get it is heartening to realise most of us do improve with age, not only gaining in knowledge but in common sense, an opposite example of this is that recently in the UK a pensioner aged 99 years old was arrested by police on suspicion for allegedly being in possession of weapons and being equipped for stealing. However nationally pensioners are only responsible for about 2,000 crimes per year out of a total of several million, the sooner we all learn the better, the imagination boggles if we don’t.

Getting to know Gypsies

It can be very rewarding to make an effort to learn about Romany gypsies. The Roma are a race whose diverse culture is ancient and interesting. It is said they have no religion but for sure they have very strong individual beliefs. The roof of their church is the sky and they have lived unfettered by walls beneath it for many thousands of years, although some have become integrated they are among the least integrated people in the world, not all are non literate and many have become famous and respected. It is sad that in general it is mostly detrimental things that are reported in the news, surely the first thing that is needed for any civilized community to do in order to live in harmony is to understand and educate, and in order to understand it is necessary for everyone to learn, and respect each other.
Problems occur when councils do not give enough attention to where they allow some travellers to settle, but gypsies should have a right to settle if they want to and are willing to abide as responsible residents, and lawful citizens.
There has been much in the news recently about travellers being given preferential treatment such as being given first priority regarding their treatment on the NHS, in my opinion who ever has the most serious condition at the time should be first to receive treatment who ever they are, (I would not leave a seriously ill or injured animal to die by the roadside even though it hadn’t paid taxes) but who will make a sensible decision regarding priority as there are many thousands of us now in need of help and priority in health, housing, education, and work. While the bungling UK government are sorting out the recession and the crisis we are in it is important that everyone has tolerance and patience with each other and with people of all races and cultures, difficult as it may seem it is possible if we all act as compassionate human beings, for that is what we all are human beings.

Childrens Games

I was thinking about some of the games that children played in years gone by before television, video games, and all the gadgets they have today to keep them amused. The games that were played during WW2, and afterwards in the school yard were very different, skipping ropes and yoyos were in constant use, and there was always football for the boys, children joined together playing hopscotch, statues, hide and seek, cats cradle, jacks, charades, tag etc, and after homework was done the streets were much safer to allow them out on their own to use their imagination for a couple of hours, and very few got into trouble as the local bobby would only have to have a word with them and that was enough to deter them from misbehaving again. There are lots of games that keep young children amused indoors or out and don’t cost anything, wouldn’t it be lovely to see young children interacting together as they used to instead of sitting in front of a TV and their computer games for hours.

Carers Who Truly Care

These days most parents find that in order to shoulder their responsibilities and raise their families it is necessary that both partners must go out to work to enable them to meet all their commitments. Paying for day care for the children is expensive and often grandparents some who should be retired after a lifetime of bringing up their own children lovingly step in to ease the burden by caring for their grandchildren while the parents go out to work. Many grandparents are living longer now and are still capable of being employed themselves but will happily forfeit the chance to add to their income and instead devote themselves to helping to care for their grandchildren which can in some cases amount to being a part time or full time job.

Showing love and helping each other within the family is as it should be for then an extended family becomes stronger. Unfortunately grandparents age and become elderly great-grandparents, the system seems to work well within the family until then, or until a loved member of the family becomes ill, or disabled. Unless there is then another member of the family willing to give up their job, livelihood, and indeed their life to become a constant carer either full time, or part time. There is for the loved one, or carer little choice due to blindness of the situation, and under funding for adequate and vital medical health care, and social services help to ease the vicious circle for carers and the elderly, the majority of whom end up in poverty.

Last year in 2008 MP’s in the UK were demanding a salary up to £110 per week for carers of the sick and elderly at home, but little has changed for the majority of carers who save, and have saved the tax payer for a long time £87 billion pounds per year. There are those who say we cannot afford to pay carers within the family at home, maybe they will change their mind when they find themselves in this situation. Thousands who are losing their jobs due to the recession will surely find plenty of work as a carer at home either part time or full time within their own families, but should they be expected to do it for a pittance, or for nothing as we find happens in third world countries. How can we help the people in those countries when we cannot help ourselves, we cannot physically live on love alone, although spiritual love and faith may well open others eyes.

Did you know because the NHS is constantly failing the elderly, which includes a shortage of health visitors among other things, hundreds of thousands of old people are being forced to die in hospital instead of respecting their wishes to die at home, up to 300,000 elderly patients are being forgotten. People are dying in hospital when there is no medical need for them to be there, but because of poor coordination of health and social care services the wishes of people who are dying aren’t known, or can’t be satisfied. Health and social care providers give low priority to end of life care including adequate pain management, up to 300.000 people are not granted their wish to die at home.

Maybe there are those who wonder why I write on my blog about some problems that people are struggling with that are already mentioned in the news or media without coming up with answers that solve them myself, the reason is that I think the more people that know about these things the better, and it often takes more than one person to come up with the answers. Everyone working together I believe that we can. All information is valuable and can be sifted, and we have knowledge about many things that have not been successful in the past, what does seem to be missing is the wisdom to know the difference.
When there is an inordinate amount of secrecy, selfishness, and greed in the echelons of power it not only corrupts governments but spreads like a cancer corrupting society, it is important that we all help each other and make sure we do not pass problems on to the next generation, it doesn’t matter what religion, culture, or status we are all things are possible for the good of all if we make it so, even the smallest ways count, and there are a countless number of people who are doing their best setting good examples and working hard, even the poorest and weakest.
Sometimes it is only honesty and a few words of encouragement that are needed to kick start anyone into the realisation that they are important, capable, and stronger than they think they are in order for them to contribute their worth. Fancy words are not needed for those unfortunate enough not to have had a grand education. Wisdom does not always come from those with fancy words, it is up to everyone to contribute their ideas and let them be known peacefully that way we may then come up with the answers for the good of all

Because more people will soon be diagnosed with dementia in the UK it is important that as much information as possible reaches everyone, even those who may think it does not concern them at the present time should be prepared, and also have consideration for those it already affects. The number of dementia sufferers is increasing and it already affects 700,000 people in the UK. The number affected is estimated to reach one million by 2021 and is expected to increase more than threefold in the next fifty years.
There are over 100 different types of dementia and it does not only affect the elderly, many thousands are young people under the age of 65. Anything that helps dementia sufferers helps those who are caring for them. Carers are already overwhelmed and their situation must not be overlooked.

Prince Charles warned that Britain faced a “catastrophic” burden from dementia in the future and welcomed plans to raise awareness of the condition.

Mental Problems Among the Homeless UK

It is very difficult for people who do not have any mental problem to understand just what a nightmare it is for those that do, it is like living in a world apart from everyone else and with very little if any help for them from anyone. Having had experience working among the homeless in the UK I found there are many who have mental problems, and there are very few who have received the help they needed, without going into detail I suggest that instead of complaining about them some people with time on their hands do some volunteer work with the homeless and find out for themselves, not all are layabouts, and with the recession there is bound to be an increase. People who have genuine mental, and behavioural problems, or difficulty getting over a bereavement, or have lost their jobs and homes through no fault of their own find themselves in a catch 22 situation, you can’t get a job without a place to live, and you can’t get a place to live without the money a job brings in. Services and support are too scarce. Anyone who thinks it is that easy to pull themselves up by their bootstraps go try it and don’t forget you should to be going through a mental trauma at the same time, and have no safety net to fall back on. The right services and support must be found and soon

The Dormouse

My daughter who lived in a country area used to have a cute Dormouse who visited her quite regularly; it was left undisturbed to wander where it willed and was sadly missed when it returned to its habitat. Dormice are very tiny just slightly bigger than a harvest mouse, and sleep three quarters of the time and are more active at night. They hibernate between October and April in the UK, and their preferred food is nectar from flowers, insects, nuts, and some fruits, they can live up to five years if food is plentiful and they are left undisturbed, They have a bushier tail than other mice and curl up into a tiny ball to sleep, they are usually found in hedgerows and woodland, and build their nests in trees, thankfully these cute little creatures are a protected species and work is going on now in the UK to help them survive.

Children encouraged to Snoop

Local authorities in the UK are encouraging children aged 7 to 11 years old to spy and report people who are noisy neighbours, those who put their rubbish out on the wrong day, and littering. The children are shown how to write down number plates which could be used in criminal prosecutions, and some are given handheld computers equipped with global positioning devices to photograph wrong doers without being seen. Primary schools could also be involved within the next two years.
Shouldn’t we first be teaching our children not to do the very things they are encouraged to report before giving them this responsibility? There are bullies that will be delighted.

Beware of the Wheelie Bins

Beware of the wheelie bins folks! In certain areas of the UK people are being swamped with them, not only are they blighting the beauty of neighbourhood environment as many rows of them are placed in front of what once were well kept terrace houses with neat gardens, which is not exactly a tourist attraction!. Those who have little room in their small gardens and out on the pavements are now left with a tiny space difficult to get by as a box is needed for paper, cans bottles and foil in another, and the rest of their rubbish in a plastic bag on the edge of their property. Wheelie bins and the amount of rubbish are very difficult for elderly people to manage and some only have fortnightly collections. Spy bugs have been fitted to wheelie bins, and dustmen in Wiltshire have been told not to move wheelie bins at all if they couldn’t pull them with two fingers. The councils are being pushed to recycle more and to persuade residents to produce less rubbish by the EU’S Recycling Directive 1999
I agree with recycling as much rubbish as possible but there definitely needs to be a better way to be found than is expected of people at present. Do read the Daily Mail and see what you can do about it.

Beautiful Little Creatures

Well we can’t be miserable all the time!, but I can never understand why anyone would want to turn to mediocre entertainment when there is so much beauty around us to be enjoyed, nature is a wonderful thing, and it’s free, it is both sad and criminal to see it destroyed. Animals are sentient beings and need our love and care, and we owe so much to those who work to preserve them. One of these enchanting creatures is the otter who wild life experts and conservationists are helping to survive. There are many reasons why these beautiful otters have become endangered which are by pesticides, road accidents, even traps and worse as some regard them as vermin. Thankfully holts are now being built for the otters in the UK to encourage them before they become extinct, nature is adept at taking care of it’s own if only humans did not interfere, all creatures deserve their space, we should not rob them of it, or destroy them for our own benefit a way should be found for us to live in harmony. One of my favourite films is Ring of Bright Water, I hope anyone who hasn’t seen it enjoys it as much as I did.

We are living in serious times so it is impossible for me to ignore things which not only affect my own life but the lives of many, it also enables me to add something to the pattern of life we all create. I began my free website http://www.carers-healingspur.co.uk/ to bring attention to the plight of carers of all ages who take care of the elderly and disabled, also to spur everyone on to recognise things on the future horizon particularly in the UK, and possibly elsewhere, also to give hope and remind all of the strength faith brings, along with peace of mind.
This will all now be updated on my blog from time to time. In the news now we are told that there is a 20 Billion pound shortfall in the NHS and in 3 years there will be no money left it really makes you wonder where the 87 Billion pounds per year that the carers saved the UK went to. It is a diabolical insult to injury to find out that while carers suffered with no help and no payment for caring for loved ones at home, MP’s were using tax payers money for home helps, gardeners etc, Everyone will feel the recession in one way or another and it is obvious that the carers, elderly and disabled who have been ignored in the past will be even lower down the scale for help now.
Consider that even food and drink is considered medication and that doctors have a legal right to withdraw it this is scary is it not.

There are reports in the news and media that elderly people have already died of starvation due to lack of attention, this is horrendous and would not be allowed for it to happen to an animal, if this is what it is like now what are the chances of a dignified death in the future. Did you know that £286 million marked for end of life care is spent by trusts on other priorities? Changes have to be made and soon, if anyone has any ideas how improvements can be made in the NHS I will be pleased to hear them.

Now it is being considered that the elderly could be asked to pay an inheritance levy of up to £12,000 to help fund care in old age, this is to be paid on retirement or deducted from the estate on death, and it is not sure how many years of care people would be entitled to, too many people are taking advantage not contributing, or saving, and still expect to have their nursing bills met by the tax payer. Anyone considering saving during this recession should beware of what could be another stealth tax. Reason to be grateful

Because of the current situation in the UK regarding MP’s expenses and forthcoming elections many important issues are being put on a back burner in the UK, it is difficult to know who to trust to push through what is most important, or get priorities in correct perspective. Thousands of people who are finding themselves in severe conditions caused by the recession may for sure take heart in the fact that many things are now continually coming to light. Countless wrongs are happening all over the world including wars. The biggest war of all is the war between positive light and negative darkness that is good versus evil. We are all being given a wake up call to which we must respond, and rejoice in what is being brought to light and share the strength, courage, righteousness and love it brings with it.
When people are fighting for justice and are up against powerful and wealthy people who make their own rules for themselves and are in a position to break them at will, and do so with impunity while putting in place a different set of rules which are unfair to the majority of those they are morally and duty bound to serve and protect, it is time to stand firm for justice. It is never worth taking advantage of others at the expense of honour and integrity. I believe people are basically good not bad, it is a matter of balance which if every individual looks within and questions what is truly good for all, we will then be universally better off.

Isn’t it amazing and disgraceful that special help is now being given to the MP’s in the UK who are undergoing mental stress because they have been found out regarding their expense claims; didn’t they bring this upon themselves? There are too many people in the UK who are mentally ill through no fault of their own and who cannot get the help they need.
The NHS is failing in its responsibility to mental health patients, an average of 4 deaths per day are reported for those in NHS psychiatric care. Campaigners say that the high death rate showed that many of the hundreds of thousands of mentally ill people who seek help each year receive a second class service in the UK, also apart from the 4 deaths nearly 3 people per day are ending up seriously harmed. Although in recent years the NHS has reduced the number of suicides in psychiatric hospitals mentally ill people who have recently returned home are widely ignored with not enough visits to see if they are feeling suicidal.

Researchers now say that those caring for a sick spouse with serious health problems are less likely to suffer an early death. Those who spent at least 14 hours a week providing care had a lower risk of dying prematurely. Now research suggests it can help people feel useful giving them a sense of purpose. Researchers at the University of Michigan tracked 3,376 men and women since 1990 and looked at those carers who died during that period of study. In my experience anything that gives someone a sense of purpose is good and 2 hours per day may well do that, but it is a different matter when caring for seriously ill loved ones at home is up to 24 hours per day as thousands are doing in the UK, perhaps another study should be made here.
